Korea opens first K-pop concert hall

Korea’s first pop concert hall opened in Seoul on June 22.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Sports Promotion Foundation cooperated for the establishment of the concert hall by renovating Olympic Hall, located inside Olympic Park.

With newly upgraded facilities, the main concert hall can accommodate up to 3,000 people and the adjacent small concert hall can accommodate up to 240 people.

The site also includes an exhibition hall showing the history of Korean pop music from the 1920s to today’s K-pop idol groups.

A celebratory concert was held on June 22 to mark the opening, featuring more than 20 of Korea’s most beloved singers. K-pop idol groups like 2NE1 and Super Junior were joined by luminaries like Patty Kim, Kim Gun-mo, Insooni and Song Dae-Kwan, and listeners were treated to music that ranged from hip-hop to trot.

Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Choung Byoung-gug attended the opening ceremony to announce the ministry’s plan to expand the government support for Korean pop culture and art in general.

With K-pop reaching new heights of popularity overseas, Korean government has created five strategies to help the genre develop, improve cultural infrastructure and business environment and expand international cultural exchanges. (Korea.net)
