Gwiyomi craze, Psy top YouTube videos in the Philippines in 2013

The Gwiyomi song, “Harlem Shake,” breaking news including the explosions at Boston Marathon, natural disasters including typhoon “Yolanda” and silly memes defined the viewing experience on YouTube in the Philippines for 2013.

Psy’s “Gentleman,” on the other hand, is the top video in the country for the year.

Every year, YouTube celebrates the top trending videos, music videos and channels, called YouTube Rewind.

YouTube released the “Defining Moments for 2013″ in the Philippines and one of them is the Gwiyomi craze.

The Gwiyomi song was originally sung by Korean singer Hari and was released last February. It spawned countless versions including Filipina cosplayer Alodia Gosiengfiao, Vice Ganda, Yeng Constantino, Momoy Palaboy with Heart Evangelista and Chris Tiu.

“Harlem Shake” became an Internet meme after “a vlogger danced wildly to (the song) and inadvertently set off a massive video trend that produced thousands of creative spin-offs from all over the globe.”

Among those who did their own versions were the Miami Heat and the University of Georgia’s swimming team.

Under breaking news, the most unforgettable moments in video on YouTube in the Philippines are the Boston Marathon explosions, meteorite crash in Russia and the birth of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s first baby.

The Filipino talent in singing also became popular YouTube videos.

“Filipinos once again tune in to watch their talented countrymen take the local, national, and global stages,” said YouTube.
Among the popular are Lee Grane on the “Voice PH” and Filipino Joseph Apostol on “The Voice” UK.

Psy’ “Gentleman,” Ylvis’ “The Fox (What Does The Fox Say?),” and the video showing the supposed first snowfall in the Philippines became silly memes in the country.

Natural disasters also became the focus of attention in the country. The videos showing the damage brought by Typhoon “Yolanda” and the earthquake in Bohol and Cebu became hot topics in the Philippines.

“Gentleman” became the top video in the Philippines and the top music video in the world this year. “The Fox (What Does The Fox Say?)” is the top trending video on YouTube for 2013.
