Korean stars fined for illegal gambling

By JONATHAN HICAP, Manila Bulletin
Three Korean celebrities were found guilty by a court of betting on illegal online gambling.
The Seoul Central District Court ordered entertainer Boom, singer Andy of boy band Shinhwa and comedian Yang Se-hyung to pay fines based on the amount of money they gambled.

Boom and Andy will pay a fine of 5 million won each (about P206,000) and Yang Se-hyung will pay 3 million won (P124,000).
It turned out that Andy gambled 44 million won (P1.8 million), Boom spent 33 million won (P1.36 million) and Yang Se-hyung betted 26 million won (P1.07 million) on illegal online gambling.
The three were part of a group of six Korean celebrities investigated for the crime.
Former H.O.T member Tony Ahn, comedian Lee Su Geun and actor Tak Jae-hoon will face trial on Dec. 6.
Lee Soo-geun previously admitted to the charge of illegal online gambling. He stepped down from the TV show “1 Night, 2 Days” because of the case.
Meanwhile, pop star Rain will face investigation again for allegations that he broke rules while he was serving in the Korean military. The case was filed by a private citizen against the singer.
Rain was discharged from the army last July. Before he finished his military service, he became involved in the issue of special treatment given to celebrity soldiers.
An SBS program which aired in June showed K-pop singers Se7en and Sangchu of Mighty Mouth visiting massage parlors while on duty.
It also showed celebrity soldiers Rain, KCM, Lee Joon Hyuk and Kim Kyung Hun going to a restaurant and drinking alcohol. They were also out past their 10PM curfew.
The Ministry of National Defense cleared Rain of any misconduct and the singer was released as scheduled.
Last January, Rain was punished with a one-week confinement to his barracks in a case about his dates with actress Kim Tae Hee.
Rain returned to Korea on Nov. 29 after finishing his concert tour in Japan.
