2PM’s Nichkhun: Personal Style and Pinoy Love

By JONATHAN HICAP, Manila Bulletin
K-pop star Nichkhun, a member of boy band 2PM, praised Filipinos for being warm and friendly, and said that he was really looking forward to see his fans up close at his fun meet.

“I felt that since the first time I was here. Everyone was so welcoming and they were always smiling. They’re really nice,” said Nichkhun at the press conference held at the Bench Tower at Bonifacio Global City in Taguig last Nov. 8.
Nichkhun is the new endorser of Philippine clothing brand Bench. The star visited the Philippines for his BenchsetterFun Meet slated on Nov. 9 at the Trinoma Activity Center and SM Mall of Asia Music Hall.
He holds the distinction of being the first Thai endorser of Bench.
“I’m really grateful and it’s an honor to be endorsing such a top brand like Bench here in the Philippines. I just got back from Germany not so long ago and I saw a Bench store there. I was like, ‘That’s my brand,’” he said.
This is Nichkhun’s third time to visit the country and he expressed, “I’m hoping to see a lot more of me in the Philippines. I want to work here more and maybe put out a single here too.”
He added, “Too bad I haven’t been here a lot but, I mean, the ladies here are pretty. And I heard there are a lot of beautiful beaches here in the Philippines. One day I will go.”
Nichkhun said his Benchsetter Fun Meet was his chance to finally meet his Filipino fans up close.
“Since I haven’t been here a lot, I haven’t had the chance to meet them close up so that’s why I’m so excited for this trip. Because (during our) last trip, we were here for the concert and we really didn’t have the time to actually meet them up close in person. This trip I’m really excited because I really get to meet them up close and I get to talk to them and know how they feel about us (2PM),” he said.
His being here now also has a special meaning for Nichkhun.
“When I first heard of the earthquake, I already had plans to come here. A part of me was already here in the Philippines so when I heard about the earthquake, it really shook me. I really want this event to be meaningful to Filipinos so I’d like to make some donations for the victims through this event,” he said.

JYP Entertainment recruited Nichkhun in Los Angeles as a trainee. He went to Korea in 2006 and eventually became part of 2PM.
“I started training and I was really bad at everything because I never dreamed to become any type of entertainer or to be on stage. I was really shy,” he said.
If he didn’t become a part of 2PM, Nichkhun said he would have been a chef or an interior designer.
As an artist, Nichkhun said he loves dancing the most but also enjoys singing, acting and modeling.
“I enjoy everything,” he said.
More than a K-pop star, though, Nichkhun is somewhat of a style icon already.
“My personal style is simple, yet appropriate to the occasion. Just very Bench because (the brand) is not flashy… (it) is something normal people can wear. That’s why I’m so grateful to be a part of Bench because it’s really me and this is really what I would wear in a normal life,” he said.
According to Nichkhun, he likes a girl who wears “something simple, too,” adding, “Not too predictable. I guess just T-shirt, jeans.”
Being an endorser of Bench, he said, is “something to be proud of because not a lot of K-pop artists are endorsing Filipino brands.”
2PM held their concert in the country last March and Nichkhun said maybe they would come back next year. “We’re planning on it,” he teased.
Nichkhun’s visit coincided with the onslaught of typhoon “Yolanda” and he said he felt for the Filipino people.
“It’s really heartbreaking to be a victim of something like this. I hope all the people in the Philippines are safe and those of you who are the victims, I hope you guys stay strong and keep your hopes up and never give up. I’m sure that when everything clears up, everything will go back to normal, for better,” he said.
