Ulala Session rose to fame when they won in the third season of Mnet's talent show "Superstar K," which is similar to "American Idol," in 2011. During the competition, Lim Yoon Taek revealed that he had stage 4 stomach cancer. He was praised for his bravery and positive attitude.
Ulala Session topped Billboard's K-pop Hot 100 chart in November 2011 with the group's cover version of "Western Sky" by Lee Seung Chul. Last May, Ulala Session released their debut album, "Ulala Sensation."
Lim Yoon Taek married his girlfriend on Aug. 7 last year and became a dad last October. After the news of Lim Yoon Taek's death spread, Korean celebrities and fans offered their condolences.
Jay Park tweeted, "My Heart goes out to the family and friends of Lim Yoon Taek...Rest in Heaven." Rapper Tiger JK posted, "I pray for the repose of your soul."
Lim Yoon Taek's doctor said the singer was diagnosed with stage 4 stomach cancer in January 2011 after a checkup and diagnosis at the Yonsei University Health System Severance Hospital, according to a report by ENewsWorld in June last year. Dr. Ra Sun Young released a statement regarding his condition.
The doctor said after the diagnosis, "We implemented anticancer treatments to stop the disease from progressing any further, and even after the treatments started, he seemed to be adapting well and endured better than most other patients with his positive attitude. The results were good, so in May 2011 he received a gastrectomy."
The operation removed parts of his stomach. "From September 2011 it was possible for him to stop receiving treatment for about three months, but because cancer cells again appeared in his abdominal cavity, he started receiving more anticancer treatments with new medicine in December, and has been receiving the same treatment since," added the doctor.
She added, "I believe that he resolved the physical and psychological difficulties that arose in the treatment of the disease with music, and his responsibility as a leader and the love and trust between his friends was the source of his power that helped him win against all difficulties."
Lim Yoon Taek's funeral will be held on Feb. 13.
