Billboard has released its annual 21 Under 21 list,
which ranked “music’s most powerful minors.”
One of them is Lee Hi, an artist under YG
Entertainment. Lee Hi’s entry into the entertainment scene was through the
first season of the SBS talent search show “K-pop Star,” which ran from
December 2011 to April 2012.
Topping this year’s list is boy band One Direction
followed by Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Ariana Grande, Earl Sweatshirt, Lorde,
Austin Mahone, Scotty McCreery, Cody Simpson, Emblem3, Cher Lloyd, Chief Keef,
Bridget Mendler, Miguelito, Joey Bada$$, Tori Kelly, Martin Garrix, Mindless
Behavior, Matty B, Lee Hi and Fifth Harmony.
“From bubbly boy bands (and a cool girl group) to
hip-hop powerhouses, a sweet K-Pop princess to a rising EDM star, and of
course, international pop icons, these are the fresh faces whose careers will
continue to pack the biggest punches over the next 12 months,” according to
Billboard.
It added, “They’ve got hit records, millions of
fans, and the kind of success most musicians only dream of – and they can’t
even legally uncork a bottle of champagne to celebrate their success.”
Lee Hi finished runner-up to Park Ji Min in the
“K-pop Star” show and was signed up by YG Entertainment.
She was supposed to be in the K-pop group Su Pearls
but when she became successful as a solo artist, YG Entertainment decided not
to launch the girl band.
“During the past 12 months, K-pop newcomer Lee Hi
racked up chart successes rivaling established Korean idols,” Billboard said of
Lee Hi.
Lee Hi was featured in Epik High’s song “It’s Cold”
which was released in early October last year. The song zoomed to the No. 1
spot on Billboard’s K-pop Hot 100 chart and on Korea’s Gaon Chart.
Her debut single “1, 2, 3, 4″ was released on Oct.
28 last year and debuted at the top of music charts. The song became No. 1 on
the Billboard K-pop Hot 100 chart for three weeks.
Lee Hi won the K-chart award for “1, 2, 3, 4″ on
Mnet “M Countdown” for three straight weeks in November last year.
She won the Beast Rookie Award for the song in this
year’s Golden Disk Awards and Seoul Music Awards.
She released her second single “Scarecrow’ last
November and her first album “First Love” in March this year.
“Fast-forward to March, throwback-inspired LP
“First Love” spawned two additional K-Pop smashes: The catchy, No. 4-peaking
‘It’s Over’; and melancholic dance track ‘Rose,’ her third No. 1. Plus, the
songbird performed with PSY at his Happening Concert, where he unveiled his
record-breaking ‘Gentleman’ video,” Billboard added about Lee Hi’s success.
