K-pop acts Girls’ Generation and Psy bagged nominations in the
first-ever YouTube Music Awards.
“These video and artist
nominations are based on YOUR views, likes, comments and subscriptions over the
last 12 months from September 2012,” according to YouTube’s official blog.

There are six categories in
the awards: Video of the Year, Artist of the Year, Response of the Year,
YouTube Phenomenon, YouTube Breakthrough and Innovation of the Year.
Girls’ Generation’s “I Got
A Boy” and Psy’s “Gentleman” are both competing for the Video of the Year
award, along with Demi Lovato’s “Heart Attack,” Epic Rap Battles of History’s
“Barack Obama vs Mitt Romney,” Miley Cyrus’ “We Can’t Stop,” Justin Bieber
feat. Nicki Minaj’s “Beauty and a Beat,” Lady Gaga’s “Applause,” One Direction’
“Best Song Ever,” Macklemore & Ryan Lewis feat. Mary Lambert’s “Same Love,”
and Selena Gomez’ “Come & Get It.”
“I Got A Boy” has amassed
more than 72 million views since it was uploaded on YouTube last Dec. 31, 2012.
Psy’s “Gentleman” has
accumulated 568 million views since April 13 this year.
Nominees in the Artist of
the Year “represent the most watched, shared, liked, and subscribed-to artists
on YouTube.”
They are Psy, Eminem, Epic
Rap Battles of History, Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis,
Nicki Minaj, One Direction, Rihanna and Taylor Swift.
The Response of the Year
nominees are “the top ‘unofficial’ fan videos on YouTube based on your views,
shares and other activity.”
They are Boyce Avenue
(feat. Fifth Harmony) – “Mirrors,” Jayesslee’s “Gangnam Style,” Lindsey
Stirling and Pentatonix’s “Radioactive,” ThePianoGuys’ “Titanium / Pavane and
Walk Off the Earth feat. KRNFX’s “I Knew You Were Trouble.”
Psy’s “Gangnam Style” is
nominated in the YouTube Phenomenon category along with “Diamonds,” “Harlem
Shake,” “I Knew You Were Trouble” and “Thrift Shop.”
Nominees in the YouTube
Breakthrough category, “for artists who experienced the biggest growth in views
and subscribers,” are Kendrick Lamar, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Naughty Boy,
Passenger and Rudimental.
The Innovation of the Year
nominees are Anamanaguchi’s “ENDLESS FANTASY,” Atoms For Peace’s “Ingenue,” Bat
For Lashes’ “Lilies,” DeStorm’s “See Me Standing” and Toro Y Moi’s “Say That.”
Fans can vote for their
favorite nominees by sharing the official YouTube Music Awards nomination
videos on Google+, Twitter and Facebook.
The awarding ceremony will
be held on Nov. 3 at Pier 36 in New York City. Performers are Avicii, M.I.A.,
Earl Sweatshirt, Tyler the Creator, and Walk Off the Earth and the hosts are
Jason Schwartzman and Regie Watts.
Music events will be held
in Seoul, Tokyo, London, Moscow and Rio and will be streamed on YouTube.
