The numbers are in and local films
dominated the box office in South Korea in 2013.
Korean films captured nine of the top
10 highest-grossing films of the year, based on figures from the Korean Film
Council (KOFIC).

2013 became a record-setting year with
213.31 million tickets sold, the first time that the Korean film industry has
surpassed the 200-million mark.
Of the total attendance, local films
sold 127.27 million tickets or a market share of 59.66 percent while foreign
films sold 86.04 million tickets or 40.34 percent share.
“Miracle in Cell No. 7,” released in
January last year and which starred Ryu Seung-ryong, Kal So-won and Park Shin
Hye, is the No. 1 top-grossing film in Korea with 91.43 billion won (about
$87.06 million) in total revenues and total attendance of 12.81 million.
It is the only film that surpassed the
10-million attendance mark.
“Snowpiercer,” a film released last
August starring Chris Evans,Song Kang-ho, Go Ah-sung and Jamie Bell, placed
second with 66.95 billion won ($63.75 million) in revenues and 9.34 million in
attendance.
Third is “The Face Reader” which
grossed 66 billion won ($62.9 million) and sold 9.13 million tickets.
The only foreign film in the top 10 is
“Iron Man 3,” which placed fourth with 70.81 billion won ($67.43 million) in
revenues and 9 million in attendance.
It is followed by “The Berlin File”
(52.36 billion won, or $49.83 million, 7.16 in attendance), “Secretly Greatly”
(48.7 billion won, or $46.42 million, 6.95 million won in attendance), “The
Attorney” (40.95 billion won, or $38.86 million, 5.68 million in attendance),
“Hide and Seek” (39.6 billion, or $37.75 million, 5.6 million in attendance),
“The Terror, LIVE” (39.84 billion won, or $37.97 million, 5.57 million in
attendance) and “Cold Eyes” (39.37 billion won, or $37.53 million, 5.5 million
in attendance).
