Korean actress found dead in apparent suicide

By JONATHAN HICAP, Manila Bulletin
MANILA, Philippines - A Korean actress who became popular in the 1990s was found dead in her home, which authorities said was an apparent suicide.

The Korean police identified the victim as 38-year-old actress Kim Soo Jin, who debuted in the Korean entertainment industry in 1994.

“Ms. Kim was found dead at 1 p.m. on March 29. It seemed she had hanged herself. We arrived at the scene after receiving a call. We are currently almost finished with our investigations,” said a representative from the Gangnam Police, according to ENewsWorld.

The actress’ boyfriend found her body and immediately called the police. She reportedly left a note that said, “I’m sorry.”

Kim Soo Jin reportedly struggled with depression. She also reportedly tried to make a comeback in the industry.

She debuted in the drama “Challenge” in 1994. She also appeared in the SBS sitcom “Soongpoong Clinic,” which aired in 1998 to 2000, as well as in various TV commercials.

Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death in South Korea. Government agency Statistics Korea said in a report that the number of deaths in Korea due to suicide totaled 15,906 in 2011 or 31.7 cases per 100,000 people and 44 deaths per day.

Last January, former baseball player and coach Cho Sung Min, who was the former husband of the late Korean actress Choi Jin-sil, committed suicide by hanging himself. He was found dead in his girlfriend’s apartment.

Choi Jin-sil committed suicide in 2008. Her brother, actor Choi Jin-young, killed himself on March 29, 2010.

The suicide rate in Korea jumped from 14.4 per 100,000 people in 2001 to 31.2 per 100,000 people in 2010.

South Korea has the highest suicide rate among countries belonging to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
